Senior Department

On moving into the Senior Department at the age of 7, the core skills are built upon. Class sizes are small. The class teacher takes the boys for their academic subjects yet they will meet subject specialists for Art, Music, P.E., Drama, Design Technology, ICT and Games from the age of 7. The whole ethos is one of individual progress and target setting. We wish the boys to be happy and successful. At the age of 8 they are introduced to basic German whilst from 9 they start Spanish and have subject specialists for all of their subjects. Latin is taught at the age of 10. We teach some French also as the boys reach the last two years of their schooling.

We use continual assessment to monitor the progress of the boys. Regular testing takes place and as the boys get older the more formal introduction of examinations is implemented. Parents receive half term and end of term reports and parent/teacher meetings are provided for.

In their final year at the age of 13 the boys will take a final set of examinations to allow them to pass to their next school. This is usually by the Common Entrance or Scholarship examination.

Pre-Prep Department

Our Pre-Prep Department is engagingly called "the Rocks" and is for boys aged 4 to 7. The accent of the teaching is very much on numeracy and literacy skills. It is a formalised structure which enables each boy to progress and be monitored on a daily basis.

The class size usually averages around 12 pupils, with a maximum of 16 taught by a teacher and class assistant. We are keen to develop the boy's skills and interest in the whole range of curriculum areas from the age of 4 in the reception class up to the end of Key Stage 1 at the age of 7.

Lots of drama, music and art develop their awareness and confidence. Regular play performances, Harvest festivals, Christmas Carols etc. add to the learning experience within the Rocks and enable the boys to become involved in the activities of the Senior Department too.
Sport and ICT are dealt with by the teachers from the Senior Department enabling the younger boys to benefit from their teaching and the facilities available there.

Future Schooling

At the age of 13 the boys have been prepared for entry into their next school by the Common Entrance examination or Scholarship examination. The school has an enviable record of Common Entrance and Scholarship passes to many senior schools.

The large majority of our leavers move on to Shrewsbury School as dayboys or boarders. We also feed Wrekin College, Ellesmere College, Oswestry School, Concorde College and Bedstone College in Shropshire as well as other independent senior schools around the country.

A few boys leave at 11 or 13 to attend other selective schools e.g. Old Swinford Hospital, Stourbridge, Adam's Grammar and Wolverhampton Grammar.
