At Kingsland Grange we complement a boys development academically with a wide range of activities ranging from fooball to drama.
Sports
The main sports participated in by all the Senior Department boys are divided into Soccer in the Winter Term, Rugby and Cross-Country running in the Spring Term and Cricket, Athletics, Tennis and Swimming in the Summer Term.
The P.E. curriculum ensures that all boys swim, play tennis and are involved in gymnastic and physical fitness programmes throughout the year.
A highly qualified and experienced coaching staff ensure that all of the boys develop their sporting talents as they pass up through the school. The boys in the Rocks Pre-Prep Department have regular P.E. sessions with the Prep department staff. Soccer, Cricket and Swimming are undertaken as well as gymnastic activities.
We play matches against other schools at as many ages and ability levels as possible. For example there are Under 9, 10,11 and 13 Football and Rugby teams.
Occasional tours are taken. For example a soccer tour to Valkenburg, Holland and another to London.
Other activities
Minor sports include mountain-biking which has a large following amongst the boys with regular outings to the hills of Shropshire. Chess is played by large numbers of boys internally as part of our Chess Championship. We have a number of County players. Canoeing and rounders are occasional sports too. We have a Hill-walking Club open to parents and families.
In the performing arts boys will take part in Speech and Drama festivals, such as the Shropshire and Chester Festivals, with great success. English Speaking Board examinations are taken by all of the older boys.
Drama and musical performances are produced throughout the year in the Pre Prep and the Prep Departments culminating in the annual school musical which takes place in the Ashton Theatre, Shrewsbury School at the end of March. This year we are performing 'Barbecue for Ben'.
Music
Music plays a very important part in the life of the school. With the increasing expansion of the Music School and more practice rooms being opened in the Main School house we can offer even more practice facilities for the boys. Peripatetic teachers of the highest calibre teach the boys across the whole range of musical instruments in regular lessons. Further more, regular group rehearsals (including brass, jazz, recorder and strings) take place.
Brass, woodwind, strings, percussion, piano and singing are all taught as individual lessons and collective groups. This is in support of the whole class teaching of music, use of computer technology, composition using the keyboard laboratory, choral work and sight reading by the Director of Music.
Music examinations are entered each term and the excellent results reflect the high standards of music teaching in the school. Music scholarships are regularly won to Senior Schools for instrumental and choral pupils.
Performances by the boys of all ages are put on for the benefit of the parents and visitors in the Rocks, Pre-Prep and the Senior Department. This year the Pre-Prep performed The Stolen Statue an in-house production, whilst the Prep Department put on Barbecue for Ben. The links between the Music and Drama Departments ensure that the talents of the boys are developed from an early age.
Boys enter music festivals also including the Oswestry Festival at which Classes are won by KG boys. We have an annual music concert at which a combined orchestra from Kingsland Grange and the Shrewsbury Junior High School played last year. Individual and group performances are a major part of the programme.
The school provides the treble voices for the prestigious Shrewsbury School Choir and they benefit enormously from the choral tuition given by the Director of the Choir, Mr Simon Dearsley. They sing most Sundays at Shrewsbury School as well as performing in their Carol Services and in Evensong at cathedrals around the country including St Albans, Lichfield, Winchester, Hereford and York Minster. We have a probationary choir for the 7 year olds who then progress into the main choir. Over a fifth of the Prep boys are involved in the Chapel Choir.
The launch of The Shropshire School of Classical Music at Kingsland Grange is a marvellous opportunity for boys and girls of all ages to benefit from tuition using a combination of Russian and English teaching. Details are available form the Main School office.
